Does Your Domain Name Say What You Think It Does?
By Dr. Kevin Nunley
It is always a treat when Internet veteran Chris Gunn drops by. After reading my column on domain names, he pointed out how many domains don't quite read the way the owner intended.
For example, PalaceOfArt.com is a proud moniker for its French owner. What the owner didn't realize at first is that many Americans saw the domain in their browser as palaceofart.com. Maybe if the owner registered palace-of-art he would be in the clear.
Now that longer domain names are more common, try spelling yours out in all small letters to see the various permutations different customers see.
Chris also points out that many of the domain names that appear to be taken are actually just reserved and will come up for grabs again in 90 days. "You'll find this to be true of a lot of the domain names being advertised for sale online," he said.
BIZynet is one of many sites that register enough domain names to qualify for 90 day billing. This means you can temporarily reserve several domain names. Live with them for a few weeks before finalizing your purchase. You may find your preference changes after a few days.
